Bark of the Birch

Birches have always been my favorite members of the forest. There were a few in my yard when I was young, and I was fascinated by their stark whiteness and the distinctive patterns in their bark. I was on a hike with my husband when we spotted a small cluster near the water's edge, and I noticed how much the bark resembles the smooth white of porcelain. There were a few felled and burned birches close by, and the contrasting texture of the charred and live bark fascinated me. I collected samples, took photos to fuel my inspirations, and set to work.
